Skûtsjes are sailing ships that were built for freight transport on the narrow and shallow Frisian waters. Through competitions it was made clear to potential clients which skûtsje was the fastest for freight transport. When the skûtsje was replaced as a freight ship, the tradition – the skûtsjesile – continued.
