Description
The Netherlands is rich in water. Waterways have contributed to the trading spirit of the Dutch over the centuries. The skûtjesile is also centuries old. Skûtsjes are sailing ships that were built for freight transport on the narrow and shallow Frisian waters. Through competitions it was made clear to potential clients which skûtsje was the fastest for freight transport. When the skûtsje was replaced as a freight ship, the tradition – the skûtsjesile – continued.
