DAVO Theme Book 12 – The Dutch Wadden Sea with stamps

28,30

Stamps have more functions than just paying postage. A postage stamp shows what a country stands for: its history, its culture and its art, sports heroes, heads of state, everything gets a chance. Also nature. A look at the NVPH catalog shows us that nature as a subject is increasingly profiling itself. After a hesitant start, the number of publications that draw attention to nature has increased sharply in recent years. TPG Post has sensed that it has become a social issue of the first order. In 1974 a series of three related nature and environment stamps was published. The endangered animals series appeared in 1985. The term endangered indicates what has gradually come into play. The environment becomes trapped between exhaust fumes, dual carriageways, runways, shipping and emissions of all kinds. Nature becomes subordinate to economy and recreation. Animals die in polluted water and air. An important function is added to the functions that were already there: the signal function, the warning function. A postage stamp shows what we should be careful with. Warns us that something is going on. That we need to realize what happens if we don't pay more attention. Eider ducks and spoonbills may appear on postage stamps, but they must at least remain present in nature. The stamp as a flashing light, alarm bell, siren, emergency bell. Once again proof that it serves more than just payment of postage.
